8 Boat Trailer Safety Tips

21/12/2023

Towing can be challenging, even for a seasoned veteran. We want to make sure you get to the lake safely and without hassle. Here are some tips our service specialists recommend to ensure safe road travel with your trailer winch for boat.

How to Keep Your Boat Trailer Safe

1. Check the Coupler

It is recommended that you regularly inspect your coupler for damage to ensure that it will secure properly to your trailer hitch. A small dent in the coupler can cause major problems, so it is recommended to replace it as soon as possible in the event of an accident and the coupler is damaged.

2. Check the Fasteners and Winch Belt

It is also recommended that you inspect the winch belt and tie for any tears or damage. It is very important for the safety of your boat and the safety of others that you make sure that the hardware used to keep your boat attached to your trailer is always in good condition.

3. Just Check Everything!

Furthermore, always check your trailer lights to make sure they are working properly, make sure your trailer safety chains are crossed, and your tires are at the correct pressure before leaving to avoid any driving frustration or accidents on the road.

4. Make sure nothing can Fly Out.

Before hitting the streets, make sure your boat is prepared for travel and any loose items secured. There's nothing worse than arriving at your destination and realizing all your stuff has flown off your boat.

5. Check Your Mirrors.

While towing, make sure you adjust your mirrors accordingly so you can see your vehicle and trailer, especially when turning to make sure you don't turn a corner too tight.

6. Unplug the Lights and remove the Tie Downs

Before launching your boat into the water, we recommend unplugging your trailer lights to prevent bulb blowing and then removing your back tethers leaving the winch strap and safety chain engaged. Once the back half of the trailer is submerged, loosen the winch strap and safety chain and finally remove your boat from the trailer.

7. Don't lose your Boat!

Make sure you have a mooring line tied to your boat before launching so you don't see it drifting down the lake without you, your gear, or any remaining passengers.

8. Maintain it properly.

Just like your boat, your trailer also has a maintenance schedule that must be followed to ensure safe and effective operation. Your wheel nuts should be tightened to your trailer manufacturer's specifications after the first 100 miles of use and every 300 miles thereafter.

Your bearing system is also an important component of your trailer, and we recommend lubricating them every year or more often depending on the amount of traveling you will be doing. Always have your bearing system checked regularly to ensure proper lubrication.
